The Market of Unforgetable Goods
The Jalan Surabaya or Surabaya Street Market stands attractively as one of the few surviving “theme markets” which still retains its authenticity and pride after all these years of the “modernization” wave.
For those who are not aware yet, the Jalan Surabaya Market is an “antique” market, or in harsher tones “flea market”. It sells various items that usually attract collectors, historians, those who simply want an extra touch of authenticity in their living room. On the contrary, those trying to get rid of stuff that are not really considered hip since last century also finds the solution in Jl Surabaya.
The Market started its business around 30-40 years ago and in the beginning consisted merely of several stalls selling China Porcelains. It then experienced expansion in terms of size and variety. It enjoys a 500-meter length in the pleasant residential area and a colorful variant of stores for customers and sellers to choose from.

Ondel Ondel: Batavia Big Smile, Freedom & The Street Of Time
Ondel-ondel is an old Batavia traditional folk performance. The performers use giants puppet figures as costumes and dance to the music.
In the past, Ondel Ondel was an expression of freedom and happiness, straying away from the cruelty of the colonial era.
Accompanied by traditional music with the “Gong” as the core percussion, the bamboo-woven ondel-ondel is constructed in such a way that it can be easily lifted by one person and fit inside the puppet, while the dance is performed.
At present, Ondel Ondel is loved by the children of Jakarta. The performance is a celebration of joy.
In some way, the Batavia people saw ondel-ondel as a guardian symbol to protect against evil deeds. It also became spiritual appreciation for their ancestors, who are believed to always guard the Batavians and their future descendants.
The tradition is always changing, especially in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia.
But through the journey of time, the Batavia people have always shown love for the big smiling puppet symbol of Joy, the Ondel Ondel.
And with that, came hope. The Batavia Ondel-Ondel will continue to dance in the street of time.
The Tide of Jakarta
As the megalopolitan capital of Indonesia, Jakarta has reveal many stories. The people and scenery is always changing, especially in the recent years of Indonesian reform era.
Although held a high prestigious status as the capital, Jakarta still has to deal with the flood situation almost every year.
And that situation has brought a new habit and profession for the resident of Jakarta.
